Welcome to the Rehabilitation Institute of Kansas City

Our mission is to build brighter futures for children and adults with disabilities. We do this by providing comprehensive medical rehabilitation services and employment services. We specialize in helping children and adults with complex disabilities achieve their greatest level of independence for participation in home, school or work and in the community.


We are accredited by CARF, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities and are certified by CMS (Medicare) as a Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Facility. We are also an approved provider by the Missouri Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. Our funding partners include United Way of Greater Kansas City and EITAS, Developmentally Disabled Service of Jackson County.


CARF Reaccreditation Survey to take place October 28-30, 2009.

Beginning October 28, 2010, the Institute will be participating in an intensive reaccreditation review process conducted by CARF, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. CARF is an international, independent accrediting body promoting quality, value and optimal outcomes of services through a consultative accreditation process that centers on enhancing lives of persons served. CARF accreditation is awarded to organizations that complete a rigorous peer review process and demonstrates that its programs and services are of the highest quality. The Institute has been CARF accredited continuously since 1971.

Terri Price: Institute’s Director of Neuropsychology and Family Services to lead Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals, Inc.

Terrie Price, PhD, Director of Neuropsychology and Family Services for the Rehabilitation Institute has been elected as President of a new academy to improve health care for people living with spinal cord injury/dysfunction. The Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals, officially launched September 24, 2009. The new organization brings together physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers and rehabilitation therapists, and is supported by Paralyzed Veterans of America, the veterans service and disabilities rights organization. “With the right partners, you can achieve anything,” said Dr. Terrie Price, the newly elected President of the Academy. “Together, our team of professionals will collaborate more closely to produce better treatment and quality-of-life outcomes for people living with spinal cord injury/dysfunction.”

With the tag line “Many Minds, One Vision,” the new Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals ( www.ascipro.org) is a merger of the American Association of Spinal Cord Injury Nurses, the American Association of Spinal Cord Injury Psychologists and Social Workers, the American Paraplegia Society, and the Therapy Leadership Council in Spinal Cord Injury. The new Academy has one vision” a world where people with spinal cord injury are healthier, more independent and more empowered through a comprehensive lifetime of care to take on all the challenges that life presents.

“We could not be more proud of Dr. Price for the leadership roles she has and continues to provide to advocate for and advance services for individuals with complex disabilities,” said Don Harkins, President and CEO of the Rehabilitation Institute. “We are proud to have Dr. Price on our team and commend her for her dedication to improving opportunities and outcomes for individuals living with spinal cord injury/dysfunction.”




Arts on the Hill


For the seventh year, the Rehabilitation Institute hosted Arts on the Hill - an annual art exhibit featuring works created by arsists with disabilities.


Assurant Employee Benefits hosted the exhibit at their headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. The exhibition showcased 160 creations by 38 artists from around the globe.

The exhibit featured a collection of photography, paintings, sculpture, jewelry and fiber art.







Success Story

Jim Hamil, pictured with his therapist, creating an original watercolor using his non-dominant hand. Jim’s goal is to exhibit and sale his work in our 2010 Arts on the Hill event.

Kansas City artist, Jim Hamil, and his wife have been long-time friends and supporters of the Rehabilitation Institute. They never dreamt that one day they, too, would need our services. Jim’s new creation was on exhibit at Arts on the Hill, the Institute’s annual art exhibition.

On July 8, 2009, Jim experienced an Arterial Venous Malformation (AVM). The AVM resulted from a series of small blood vessels in Jim’s brain became entangled and began to bleed into his brain. Similar to a stroke, the AVM affected Jim’s ability to walk, talk and function independently. After a three-week hospital stay, Jim came to the Rehabilitation Institute where he is receiving physical, occupational and speech therapy to regain his lost abilities.
