Admission Criteria

We provide services to adults and children who experience a disability impacting their activities at home, school or place of employment and who may reasonably be expected to benefit from our services. The Rehabilitation Institute of Kansas City is committed to serving a diverse population and does not restrict acceptance for services due to sex, creed, race, religion or cultural background.

For admission to Outpatient Medical Services, the individual served must:
• Have a diagnosis of a developmental disability, illness or injury resulting in a change in their previous functional daily activity status
• Have a reasonable expectation for greater functional independence, the ability to achieve goals and show progress
• The potential to comprehend and cooperate with the plan of care
• Be medically stable

Common diagnoses considered for patient admission include:
• Cerebral Vascular Accident
• Brain Injury
• Spinal Cord Injury
• Amputation
• Multiple Musculoskeletal Trauma
• Multiple Sclerosis
• Complicated orthopedic conditions
• Patients with other impairments who would benefit from intensive rehabilitation services and have the potential to return to the community

For admission to Employment Services, the individual served must:
• Be at least 14 years of age (some work settings require that participants be at least 16)
• Be able to care for their personal needs or direct such services if provided by a personal assistant that they employ or arrange for through a funding source
• Possess sufficient emotional control so as to pose no physical threat to themselves or to others

Common issues presented at employment admission include:
• Unemployment
• Unknown employment potential
• Unclear employment goals
• Lack of marketable work skills
• Lack of knowledge regarding community options
• Poor job seeking skills
• Uncertain of technology needs

Individuals with uncontrolled seizure disorders or diseases, which are communicable through casual contact, are not eligible for services. The Rehabilitation Institute of Kansas City does not provide psychiatric treatment, substance abuse treatment or transportation to/from the individual’s place of residence.
